The gas meter of a home will show the consumption of cubic meters of natural gas consumed. Thanks to the gas meter, the distributors will know the energy consumed by each home.

Natural gas meter

Just as the electricity meter measures the kilowatts consumed, the gas meter is a device that is responsible for measuring the natural gas that a home has consumed throughout the billing period.
Thanks to the natural gas meter, distributors can know the consumption, and then indicate it to the marketer who will apply the costs agreed in the rate in order to generate the natural gas bill for the customer.

Types of natural gas meters

There are several types of natural gas meters but the most used in homes and homes is the membrane meter.
Contrary to what many users think, there are still no smart gas meters, since the expected benefits of implementing smart meters in the gas sector are lower than in the electricity sector, because there are no benefits from modulating daily consumption.

Therefore, in natural gas, the consumer cannot obtain economic benefit by moving gas consumption from peak hours to off-peak hours as in the electricity market.

This reason, among others, is what explains why there are currently no smart gas meters in circulation. For this reason, most homes still have a membrane gas meter.

Other types of gas meters

Rotary piston counter
Turbine counter

Ultrasonic counter

These meters are used for large industries.
How does a gas meter work?

For the correct functioning of the gas meter, the parts that make up the membrane gas meter must be properly balanced and calibrated by the distributor, which will also be responsible for carrying out periodic inspections to evaluate the correct functioning of the meter.

The gas meter has four essential parts that allow it to effectively measure the natural gas consumption of the home or premises.
Measurement process in a gas meter

The meter receives the supply at the input socket.
The inlet valve allows gas to reach the hermetically closed gas chamber.
Next, the natural gas leaves the chamber through the outlet tube, continuing its journey.
During this process the counter shows the cubic meters of gas consumed

Why isn't the gas meter working?

One of the checks that the customer can do if they notice that the gas meter is not working is to make sure that the numbers on the meter move every time they use gas.

If the customer notices that the gas meter is broken; does not collect the information correctly or the numbers fail, you must immediately contact your gas distributor if you have it on a rental basis. (If the gas meter is owned, the customer must contact a specialized technician).

How to read a gas meter?

Gas distributors must read the gas meter at least six times a year to know the real consumption of the home in that period.
Although these readings are generally carried out by a professional technician, any user can provide the information to the technician by knowing how to read the meter correctly.
To do this, the customer will only have to locate the gas meter and look at the numbers on its dials. The client must write down the first 5 numbers counting from the left plus the 3 that are separated by a comma.

Installation of a gas meter

The gas meter will be installed in the home as long as the gas is previously registered. Generally, the installation of the gas meter is carried out by the distributor. If the client has purchased the meter on their own, they will have to consult with a specialized technical service for the installation of the meter.
Gas meter location

The gas meter can be installed both inside the home and outside the home. As of today, there is no regulation that requires the installation of a gas meter inside the home. Although whether it is located outside or inside, it will have to comply with a series of regulations.

If the gas meter is located outside, it will have to include a stainless steel meter support and a galvanized roof, this has been mandatory since January 2016.

If the meter is located indoors, it must be in a ventilated place. If there is class A equipment on site (hobs or gas stoves, for example), ventilation will be required at a height of 1.80 meters or more.

Who installs the gas meter?

Depending on whether the client buys or rents the gas meter, the installation will be at the client's expense or not. As a general rule, and to avoid problems, the most common thing is for the customer to rent the gas meter from the distributor when registering natural gas.

In that case, the distributor itself will be responsible for installing the natural gas meter and its maintenance.
In the unusual case, that it is the client who is responsible for the purchase of the gas meter, it will be the user themselves who hires an installation company so that it is responsible for the installation of the gas meter in the domicile.

Who pays the gas meter?

The customer can pay for the gas meter in full or rent it from the company. The second case is the most common, since in this way any problem that may arise with the gas meter such as a breakdown or total breakage, it will be the distributor who will assume the repair or replacement.

While in the event that the client decides to buy the gas meter on their own, they will have to assume the entire cost of the meter, plus its installation and verification. Furthermore, he will be directly responsible in the event of a breakdown or breakage of the meter.
Gas meter price
The price of the gas meter varies depending on the meter model and its caliber. Generally, G4 and G6 membrane type gas meters are used for domestic consumption.
Those people who have the meter on a rental basis will pay it month by month through their gas bill. This concept will appear reflected on the invoice with the corresponding amount.
The monthly rental price of the gas meter does not usually exceed one euro.
Additionally, repairs to gas meter breakdowns or replacement will be included in this price.
In the event that the client decides to buy the gas meter, the initial outlay that will have to be made will be around €100 - €200, in addition to the fact that the client will have to take care of the installation of the meter (by contacting a company installer) and its maintenance.
How long does it take to install the gas meter?
From the moment the gas is registered, the time it may take for the distributor to send the technician to install the natural gas meter can be up to 15 days.
The distributor itself will be in charge of sending the technician for the installation once it verifies that all the data provided by the client to process the registration is correct.
Fines for cheating a gas meter
Tampering with a gas meter is completely illegal and doing so can result in large financial fines for the user.
As with electricity, any person who has a rigged gas meter will be punished with a fine of three to 12 months of the amount for the estimated maximum consumption (the fine can be up to €4,000).
In addition, some distributors may cut off the supply and force the customer to also pay double registration fees.
